Another somewhat mysterious album, this one commissioned by B-movie director Custer Feldspar. Shot on the fly, with actors from Nigeria's burgeoning soap opera industry, this 'Sherlock-sploitation' film follows Holmes and his long-suffering friend Watson as they pursue shadowy arms-dealers and mad mystics across Europe, and then Ethiopia, the Sudan, the Congo and West Africa. In a movie described by one critic as "hapless and ramshackle and occassionally, inadvertantly brilliant beyond belief," the music works overtime to bring an emotional depth where one is only hinted at in the fast-paced screenplay.

The Music. Initially contacted to produce music for a nature documentary to be called "Deep in Ubangi Territory," Ian Moore wrote several sketches for sequences titled "Swaying Reeds -- Anglerfish -- Up a Waterfall" and "Gibbon vs. Harpy Eagle" before he began to suspect that he was being somewhat misdirected. "I kept getting notes back from Mr Feldspar's office asking for changes -- make this more suspenseful, we need more drums and drama here, something noble with strings, think of the python as a more complex character, it needs its own theme, explore its inner feelings and desire for some higher truth...get orchestral." After several months on the project Mr Moore made noises as if to quit; Mr Feldspar finally sent him some of the actual scenes from the movie, which was by this time almost half finished. "Sure enough, these bizarre long pieces with titles like "Elephant Rain Dance" and "Banana Tree Beetles" were stunning when applied to the action sequences they'd been shooting in West Africa. Now that I knew what was going on I was with the project 100 percent... People had been calling my stuff "spaghetti steampunk" for a while, and suddenly here was a movie that fit that ridiculous moniker perfectly; it didn't even occur to me that I should be charging more money for a feature film soundtrack versus just a little TV documentary, more's the pity."
